In The Heat of The Moment
Proverbs 25

Key Verse:
Proverbs 25:21-22 (CSB)
“If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink, for you will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will reward you.”

Reflection:
When someone angers or hurts us—even something as small as cutting us off in traffic—our natural reaction is often frustration, not kindness. The idea of “heaping burning coals” on an enemy might sound appealing in the heat of the moment, but this verse isn’t about revenge. In ancient Egypt, carrying a pan of burning coals on one’s head was a sign of repentance. This passage teaches that responding with kindness can lead to conviction and remorse in the other person, potentially leading them to a
change of heart.

Proverbs 25 emphasizes wisdom in social interactions. It warns against hasty judgments, retaliation, and revenge, instead urging us to show self-control, discretion, and kindness—even toward those who wrong us. It also highlights the power of well-timed, gentle words in resolving conflicts.

Application:
Think of a time when someone hurt or angered you. How did you respond? If you tend to react quickly in frustration, ask God to help you respond with kindness instead. You might be surprised at how it changes the situation.

What is one key lesson you learned from Proverbs 25 today?

Ask God to reveal any unforgiveness or bitterness in your heart.

Prayer Focus:
Dear Heavenly Father, help me to be the first to speak kindness to those who hurt or anger me. Give me the strength to forgive, just as You have forgiven me. I ask for Your help in handling frustrations with grace. Amen.
