Proverbs Chapter 9 – An Invitation to Wisdom

Webster defines wisdom as –

1 a: the ability to discern inner qualities and relationships (insight)

     b: good sense (judgement)

     c:  generally accepted belief

d: accumulated philosophical or scientific learning (knowledge)

2 : a wise attitude, belief, or course of action

3 : the teachings of the ancient wise men

The writing of Proverbs 9 is attributed to King Solomon. Historical sources suggest Solomon was only about 20 years old when he began his reign as king.  He was known for his wisdom at a very young age, famously asking God for that wisdom.

Proverbs 9:1 says, “Wisdom has built her house; she has set up its’ seven pillars.”

The two women mentioned throughout Proverbs are Lady Wisdom and Lady Folly.  In verse one, Lady Wisdom (the strong foundation) has set her house on 7 pillars – counsel, knowledge, understanding, might or strength, power or authority, riches and honor.

Proverbs 9:10 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

Godly wisdom gives us perspective, vision and purpose for living.  If we have godly wisdom, then we will have balance in life.  Wisdom is important to God because it allows us to understand and follow His principles.  It enables us to make good decisions, build solid relationships and live in accordance with His teachings.  Wisdom is the ability to put our knowledge to work for God.

In contrast to Lady Wisdom, there is Lady Folly.  While Lady Wisdom is life-giving and eternal, Lady Folly is shallow and short-lived.

Proverbs 9:13-16 says, “Folly is an unruly woman and she is simple and knows nothing.  She sits at the door of her house, at a seat at the highest point of the city, calling out to those who pass by, who go straight on their way, ‘Let all who are simple come to my house!’”…  Ultimately, the way of Folly leads to distraction.  There is no life to be gained by following Folly’s path.

I believe that in today’s world, Folly works by the power of suggestion…. suggestions that lure us away from God’s wisdom and lure us into constant distractions.  Many people go through life, uncommitted and not sure which direction they are going.  Many live smartphone and social media addicted lives.  From dusk to dawn, constantly “scrolling”. It’s not that we have clear reasons or urgent things to do on our phones.  It’s just that the phone is “there” and we are bored.  More often, it’s about having an impulsive reflex and passive addiction.  And, that makes us extremely vulnerable to the world where the enemy is ready to pounce and consume our attention.  The devil is a smart deceiver and he tailors his temptations to our particular weak spots.  He knows exactly how to commandeer our time and attention.

What we give our attention to can make us spiritually sick or spiritually healthy.  Are you spending your time praying to God for Wisdom for purposeful living?  Or are you listening to the loud, seductive voice of Folly?  “But little do they know that the dead are there, and her guests are deep in the realm of the dead.” Proverbs 9:18

Guided Prayer

Abba Father, give us a fear of Your great and glorious majesty.  Thank You for the gift of wisdom and insight.  Help us to learn from those who are wise and righteous and to grow in understanding from their teachings.  Help us to be a learner AND a teacher, seeking to pass on the wisdom we receive, encouraging others to grow in their knowledge and understanding of You. Thank You, for saving us from and not leaving us to, our folly and foolishness. Thank You for giving us Your word and Your wisdom when we ask. From the One who knows what is best in our lives, Lord, help us to live out of the overflow of Your wisdom.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
