Proverbs 17

Provers 17 is a collection of thoughts on different aspects of life; like peace and quiet, good judgement, the dangers of lies and strife and the meaning of true friendship.  It also touches on ungodly children and the importance of integrity.

Proverbs 17:1 says, “Better a dry crust, with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting with strife.” A simple life with peace and quiet is best even if it means less material wealth.

Proverbs 17:2 says, “A prudent servant will rule over a disgraceful son and will share the inheritance as one of the family.” So, actions and competence and character determine leadership and blessings.  Our choices should favor those who demonstrate integrity and skill.  This verse warns against nepotism.

Proverbs 17:3 says, “The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but, the Lord tests the heart.”  God uses trials and challenges in our lives to refine our hearts and reveal our true character.  God’s testing helps us grow and learn to trust in Him more.  God’s testing is never arbitrary or cruel.  It is not intended to harm us. Always remember to thank our Father, even when we are neck deep in trials and challenges.  Remember, God’s plan is ALWAYS better than our plan.

Proverbs 17:4 says, “A wicked person listens to deceitful lips; a liar pays attention to a destructive tongue.”  Proverbs 17:14 says, “Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.”  Both these verses remind us that words can be harmful and starting arguments is a horrible waste of our time. Once those words leave your mouth, you can’t get them back…they can’t be un-heard. Bruises fade.  But, hateful, harmful words will be remembered for many years.

Proverbs 17:17 says, “A friend loves at all times and a brother is born for a time of adversity.”  This verse reminds us of the value of true friendship and the special bond between siblings. True friends love is constant. Siblings are a natural source of support and comfort, especially is hard times. I have friends who have been a part of my life for over 50 years.  One of God’s greatest blessings.

Proverbs 17:22 says, “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”  The verse commands the reader to have a cheerful heart…..it’s good for you!  With a cheerful heart, you look at the world happily.  Your health, physical, mental and spiritual, will benefit.  Having a crushed spirit will have negative effects on your health and on the people around you.

Proverbs Chapter 17 emphasizes the importance of living an honest life regardless of material possessions. God tells us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Proverbs 17 adds that we should watch our tongue, be happy with a simple life, be grateful for true friends and our siblings and live our life with a cheerful heart.

I believe when King Solomon wrote Proverbs 17, he wanted to offer practical wisdom; stressing the importance of peace, wisdom and the value of relationships.  It highlights the danger of strife and the benefits of understanding and compassion.  Solomon talks about the value of a quiet life and the foolishness of arguing; the importance of friendship and the consequences of foolishness.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I pray that we all seek Your wisdom, understanding and knowledge.  Teach us, Lord, to walk more in Your ways and less in our own ways and not the ways of the world.  May we always show Your love and mercy and grace to ALL.  I pray that we ALL seek Christ Jesus, our Lord and Savior.  And, that we all receive our full inheritance.  Thank You for godly fathers, mothers, men and women You have placed in our lives.  I pray that each parent embraces the responsibility  of training their sons and daughters the way they should go….always honoring God, the Father.  I pray that You use us to be a friend to others in their time of need.  Help us to rejoice those who are rejoicing and weep with those who are weeping.  Please give us the strength that comes from love so we will cover the failures of others with mercy and forgiveness.  Please grant us a cheerfulness that brings healing and joy to those around us.  Fill us with Your love and peace so we may be a source of encouragement to those who need it.

Through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen.
