Building Up Our Children in Christ
“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” – Proverbs 22:6 (ESV)
As parents, guardians, or spiritual mentors, Proverbs 22:6 calls us to a sacred task: to train, guide, and disciple our children in the ways of the Lord. This training isn’t just about enforcing good behavior—it’s about forming hearts that love Jesus and desire to follow Him.
The word “train” in this verse implies intentionality. It’s not a passive hope that children will figure out their faith; it’s an active shaping of their character, beliefs, and priorities through Scripture, prayer, and example. This includes family devotionals, praying together, and pointing to Christ in both joyful and challenging moments. They are always watching and listening to us, so if we can mirror Christ daily in our words and actions, they will see and follow our steps.
Building children up in Christ also means helping them discover the unique gifts God has placed in them and encouraging them to use those gifts for His glory. It’s about creating a home where Christ is not just spoken of, but seen in the way we love, serve, and forgive.
Though the world will tug at their hearts, the foundation we lay now—rooted in truth and grace—will remain with them. God’s Word assures us that this investment will bear fruit, even if it takes time.
Reflection Question:
What are some specific ways I can be more intentional this week in pointing my children to Christ through both my words and actions?
Prayer:
Lord, give me wisdom and patience as I raise my children in You. Help me to teach them Your ways not only with words, but through my daily life. Let their hearts be drawn to You, and may they walk in Your truth all the days of their lives. Amen.
