Foundations Devo: Week 1, Day 1
The Triune Nature of God
Scripture: Matthew 28:19
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
In this passage, Jesus gives His final command to His disciples, a commission that extends to all of us. The instruction to baptize in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit highlights the unity of the Godhead.
The use of the singular “name” (not “names”) points to the fact that God is one, yet revealed in three distinct persons. This doctrine is central to Christianity, shaping how we understand God’s nature, His work in the world, and His relationship with humanity.
The Trinity reveals a God who is eternally relational. The Father loves the Son, the Son loves the Father, and the Spirit is the bond of love between them. This divine relationship has existed before time began. We, too, are invited into this relationship, experiencing the love of the Father through the grace of the Son and by the power of the Spirit. The Trinity isn’t just a theological concept; it’s the framework of how God interacts with the world and invites us into His story of redemption.
Embracing the mystery of the Trinity is part of walking by faith. We may not fully comprehend it, but we can trust in a God who is both transcendent—beyond our full understanding—and immanent—closer to us than our own breath.
Reflection:
- How does your understanding of the Trinity affect your prayer life and worship?
- When you think of God as three persons in one, how does it impact your view of His work in your life and the world around you?
